Problem-Based Learning

This master's level research project entailed working with a group to dive deeper into pedagogical techniques that engage students in the classroom and support 21st century skills. My group decided to research and implement problem-based learning. Here is the culminating result of our research and advocacy for problem-based learning (also linked below). I support problem-based learning in the classroom as students are able to take ownership of their learning, work to solve real-world problems, and practice skills such as collaboration, creativity, and global awareness.

The Influence of Choice on Student Engagement

The culminating research project in my Master's of Education program focused on the influence of choice in student reading engagement. This study took place among High School Juniors in a World History class in Gunnison, Colorado. The subjects in my study were the first graduating class that needed specific reading SAT scores to graduate. However, the reading scores at Gunnison High School have been slowly decreasing.  In order to tackle this problem, students need to be excited about the materials they read. The result of the research determined that students, when given choice, are more engaged in reading.
