Biography

Picture
My name is Taylor Rose Martin. I am a Colorado native, an international teacher, a nature enthusiast, and a lover of outdoor recreation.

My most recent teaching experience was at Colegio Menor in Quito, Ecuador. In this role, I was a high school Social Studies teacher, 9th grade chair and student liaison, and Movimiento Verde (environmental club) advisor.

I also have experience as a Student Council Faculty Advisor and student international travel group leader.

I was born and raised in Colorado Springs, Colorado. I moved to Boulder, Colorado in 2011 and completed my Bachelor's degree in History and Anthropology at the University of Colorado at Boulder. I completed an undergraduate honors thesis in history and graduated cum laude in 2015.

During my time in Boulder, I volunteered at Camp Wapiyapi, a camp for children inflicted with cancer and their siblings. I also worked as a mentor for at-risk youth at the local alternative high school through Impact the Youth.

After graduating, I traveled around Europe and the United States. After three years of travelling and moving frequently, I decided to pursue a career in education. I began my Master's in Education studies at Western Colorado University in Gunnison, Colorado in 2018.

I conducted my student teaching in a 9th grade Geography classroom at Gunnison High School in 2018-2019. During the fall of 2019, I was a substitute teacher for the district. In the spring of 2020, I worked as a significant behavioral needs paraprofessional at Gunnison Elementary and Middle School. In the fall of 2020, I began teaching 9th grade Geography at Gunnison High School, and in June of 2021, I became the Student Council Faculty Advisor for Gunnison High School.

In August 2022, I moved to Quito, Ecuador, for my first international teaching job. I lived there for two years and taught at Colegio Menor. These two years inspired me to experience more of South America.

I am currently at the tail end of a 7 month road trip through South America. My love for travel and my desire to connect with people around the world have me searching for my next international teaching destination.

Autobiography of an Educator

From a young age, I possessed a natural ability to connect with people. I have always immersed myself in people and their stories, particularly the stories of people from places unknown. My fascination with world cultures fueled my curiosity to learn about the world through geography, history, and anthropology.

My love for people and the world around me inspired me to pursue degrees in History and Anthropology. I loved learning about the world and the people who make up this beautiful and diverse ethnosphere. Though I love to study these topics, the one thing that was missing was a deeper connection to people.

Throughout college, I volunteered in mentorship programs and worked at a camp for children with cancer and their siblings. These volunteer opportunities allowed mee to connect withchildrens of all different age, which waso powerful and fulfilling. It was then that I knew I wanted to work with this age group.

I completed my student teaching in a 9th-grade classroom in Gunnison, Colorado. Although I had heard "horror stories" about working with fourteen- and fifteen-year-olds, I instantly fell in love with this age group. When I applied for teaching jobs, my mentor told me that my greatest strength in the classroom was my ability to connect with the students.

I worked for four years in the Gunnison Watershed School District. I was an intern, a significant behavior needs specialist, and a 9th-grade geography teacher. Although I loved living and working in Gunnison, I had a great desire to travel the world.

After I graduated from college, I started to travel outside of the United States. My first trip was to Iceland, and I was instantly hooked on the experience of being somewhere totally new and out of my comfort zone.

In August of 2022, I moved to Ecuador. I quickly learned that moving to a new country is not for the faint of heart. It was challenging to move to a new country where I did not speak the language and did not yet have an understanding of the cultural nuances that I took for granted in the United States. As I grew to love life in Ecuador, I also grew to love the challenge of living in a new country.

I taught at Colegio Menor in Quito, Ecuador, for two years. It was amazing how much more at ease and comfortable I felt in my job and in Ecuador the second year. I enjoyed my time in Ecuador working at Colegio Menor. I grew personally and professionally, and I am so grateful for the opportunities that have come my way because of this change.

After I completed my contract at Colegio Menor, I wanted to experience more of this amazing continent. I am currently finishing a 7-month road trip from Ecuador to Ushuaia, Argentina, and back up to Santiago, Chile.

I am ready for a new opportunity. I want to continue to grow into new experiences and change, both personally and professionally. I believe that continuing my exploration of the world and stepping into new academic opportunities will enhance my ability to connect with people and become an even better educator and world citizen.
